Suggested Boycott: Delta and the Saudi 'no-Jew' fly policy
Delta Airlines has recently announced its intention to welcome the Saudi Arabian Airlines into its "Sky Team" alliance. The problems associated with this decision have been pointed out in this World Net Daily Article. The article raises the concern that such a partnership would "require the American carrier to ban Jews and holders of Israeli passports from boarding flights from New York or Washington bound for Jeddah, prompting outraged accusations of illegal religious discrimination".
According to the article: "The issue, which has caught the attention of the American Center for Law and Justice already, was raised when Washington attorney Jeffrey Lovitky was perusing airline procedures for travel."
Mr. Lovitky's concern was echoed by ACLJ's Senior Council: "As we learn more about the issue and facts, we are determined to ensure that American citizens do not face discrimination by airlines like Delta that are passenger code-sharing with Saudi Arabian Airlines," said Colby M. May, director and senior counsel of the ACLJ.
ACLJ plans to continue their efforts to press this issue: "We will be communicating our position with members of Congress, the State Department and Delta Air Lines to ensure that the rights of American citizens are protected,"
They have already alerted Delta directly of their concerns in a letter and have received a couple of responses. The initial response did not even bother to deny that such discrimination may be taken place, but shifted the blame to the Saudi Government. (See copies of the letters in the WND article)
Basically what they are saying is that they have no responsibility in this but are merely complying with the "applicable laws of each country". Is there no moral responsibility not to comply with laws that so clearly violate the "Higher Law", which the U.S. pointed to at the Nuremberg Trials when Nazi war criminals defended their actions by noting that they were merely following orders? Did not several American individuals and groups organize a boycott of South Africa over the matter of Apartheid? Is this matter of any less importance than Apartheid was?
We at the Defenders Council of Vermont would like to suggest that Delta, at a minimum, has a moral obligation to remove Saudi Arabian Airlines from their Sky Team alliance until they denounce any policy that would result in the discrimination of Jews, or any other ethnic, religious, etc. group. A decent respect for the dignity of each individual human person demands at least that much. Furthermore, we would like to suggest that, should Delta choose to continue its current course, all Americans of conscience boycott them until they see the light.
